Everything To Know About The Achilles Heel of Insulation – Cold Bridging

Here at Snug Network we like to ensure that we are providing our customers with the most accurate helpful information on everything energy. Therefore we speak to the sector experts. We recently spoke to Liam who is a cold bridging expert, from Enviroform.

What Is Cold Bridging?

Cold bridging is where there is a break in the insulation layer. This type of break in the insulation can appear anywhere around your home including around walls, window reveals, joist ends, ceilings and electrical sockets.

How do I Know if there is cold bridging in my home?

If there is cold bridging present in your home there are many tell-tale signs, the biggest tell being that mould will usually form on inside walls near the cold bridge.

How does cold bridging effect my home?

Cold bridges cause not only mould but also damp and heat loss. This heat loss can then result in an increase of your heating bills as you will most likely have the heating on for longer periods of time at a higher temperature.

If my home has been fully insulated could there still be cold bridges?

Thermo-Trac Installed

Insulation with Thermo-Trac* Installed

The simple answer is yes. If insulation has not been installed effectively such as below the damp proof course or around windows, a cold bridge will appear. Before installation all surfaces/areas were at the same cold temperature whereas after installation you may notice areas which are colder than others, these are indicative of cold bridges.

Can cold bridging fixed or avoided?

Rather than being fixed, cold bridging should be avoided from when you initially have your insulation installed. This can be done by ensuring that your insulation is installed correctly and continuously, this is called “Thermal Cocooning”.   However, if your home has already been insulated and is suffering from cold bridging there are solutions available.  The Snug Network, offer effective cold bridging products to suit different construction junctions.
